Ultimate Budget tips!

We are students and therefore live on a budget. We would like to buy new clothing, going out to eat and party a few nights a week, unfortunately these things cost a lot of money. That’s why we want to share our best Budget Tips with you and started this blog! For our last blog post we created a list with the 10 ultimate budget tips;

Our budget tip Top 10
1. Instead of going dining in a restaurant, you can have a cheap fun meal with your friends. You can set up a potluck where each guest brings one dish (starter, main etc.). You can even make it an evening with a theme. For example Italy or an American style diner.

2. When you want to extend your wardrobe, don’t go running to the shops immediately. Perhaps you can update you old clothing and make them trendy again. Or you can make your own clothing, which is really popular at the moment. You need fabrics (go to the market for cheap fabrics), a sewing machine (second hand is cheaper) and a couple of lessons or a good book to learn how to make your own dresses. Maybe your mother can help you with that, when we were little our mothers made the most horrible clothing for us. But they have got the experience!

3. The summer is coming and we all like to enjoy the sun. An afternoon on a terrace however is very expensive. What we like to do when the weather is good is organizing a pick nick. Pick a meeting place and let everybody bring something to eat or drink and a few mats. The budget afternoon can begin. At the end of the day you have a full stomach and a pretty color on your face.

4. Experience your childhood all over again! When we were young we exercised a lot without even noticing it, besides that we paid almost nothing for it. It is almost summer, so start rollerblading and rope skipping again!

5. The best make-up tip we can give: You do not need to buy really expensive labels. The cheaper labels give the same results. Kim is really enthusiastic about the cheap cosmetic label: Essence.

6. Decorating your home doesn’t have to be expensive as well. It is actually really fun to create nice decoration without paying a dime, because it makes you very creative. The pictures show some examples:

Chantal had a neighbor who created her own wallpaper in the kitchen out of recipes from a monthly magazine. It looked really fun and creative.

7. When you feel like partying, organize an American party! In America is it common to bring your own food and drinks when you go to a party. So make an invitation and invite all your friends, your party on a budget can start!

8. Instead of going out with your friends or watching television you can relive old times with board games. We all have played a lot of board games when we were young and most of us have saved our favorites. So wipe the dust of the board games and have a really fun night with your friends.

9. Holidays cost a lot of money, however as a student we have a benefit. We are more flexible in when we would like to go on holiday. Some weeks are a lot cheaper to fly, so avoid the summer and try to book a flight for example the first week of January.

10. Don’t go grocery shopping when you are hungry! And make a clear list of what you need and stick to the list!

Surprise…. Presents time!

Hello ladies. There is always a reason to give a present to your best friend. Not only because it is her birthday, but also just because she is the best friend you can wish for or just for fun. The only problem is, nice presents can be expensive. Today we would like to give you some pointers on how to buy or make a nice present on a budget.

Instead of going to a restaurant, save your money and try to make a lovely dinner. You can just make her favorite dish or make something special which you normally wouldn’t cook. Keep in mind that a large dinner can cost a lot of time. Try to cook as much as possible in advance so you don’t have to stay in the kitchen all evening. Also, don’t try to make it too difficult. If you cannot cook, you can choose for a simple but nice gourmet or fondue.

You can also make your own high tea with homemade cupcakes and sandwiches. If she likes to bake you can try to make the cupcakes together. There are lots of possibilities for different recipes and toppings. See our blog about budget food for more baking and budget tips.

Another tip is to be creative. You can make your own birthday  or thank you card or think of a nice present which you can create. For example, buy an empty photo frame and make a collage of your favorite pictures together.

You can organize a surprise party for your best friend as a present. This could be expensive, but if you ask to organize the party with a couple of friends it can reduce the costs. Try to think of a special cocktail for the evening. For inspiration the Dutch readers can look at the website cocktail maken  or All recipes.

Finally for more tips you can always look at some of our previous blog posts. For example organize a beauty girls night and look for some tips at the blog BudgetTips for facial hair and nail care. Or you can think of a lovely day out. See for inspiration our blog Seize the day.

Good luck!!

It’s festival time!

Spring is in the air!! And of course spring means the beginning of the festival season! In the next few months, we can enjoy the best performances at all kinds of different festivals and parties. Many festivals are expensive but there are some free and some pretty cheap ones to find!

At first, our Dutch and Belgian readers can take a look at the website of Festival Info. This website contains all the free festivals and parties in 2012. The most well-known are Parkpop in The Hague, the Vierdaagsefeesten in Nijmegen, the Gay Pride in Amsterdam and the Free your Mind Festival in Arnhem.

The website of festivals in Europe is Festival Searcher. On this website you can find a variety of festivals. They give information about the well known festivals such as Rock am Ring in Germany and Roskilde in Denmark but they also mention some nice small festivals that are just as much fun and a little bit cheaper.

The atmosphere at festival is so great! Everyone has to experience that. You can just do whatever you want and dress however you like without anyone making fun of you. And we know festivals are expensive but the free and cheap ones are certainly worth the try!

Good luck and have fun girls.

Budget furnishing: second hand

We hope you all got some inspiration from our latest post! Our next tip for furnishing your house on a budget is to make use of second hand furniture. Every country has its own website for second hand furniture, in the Netherlands we have Marktplaats.

Second hand is much cheaper then new furniture and many times you can buy something unique! Sometimes, you have an idea in your mind but you can’t find in the stores, then you have to take a visit to a second hand furniture website. You can’t imagine what people offer for incredible low prices! However, searching on a second hand website can take a lot of time. Every day, thousands of new products are being presented. You need to decide what you are looking for in what color etcetera. If you want something specific you have to take a short look every day. Note that when you find something, call or e-mail the seller instead of making an offer on the website. Offers are often being ignored because sellers don’t know if it’s serious.

Many people buy their stuff on these websites. Sometimes it’s great quality stuff and it can be very unique. Moreover, people won’t even notice you bought second hand furniture if you don’t want people to know! It’s also possible to combine second hand furniture with new furniture.

Take a look and have fun!

Decorating your house on a budget: thrift stores

There’s no place like home. We think every woman can agree on that one. Everyone decorates their house in their own style and we want to achieve one thing: it must feel like your own special place.

Students, starters, divorced people and people with a low income can’t buy expensive furniture. Unfortunately, the most beautiful couches, tables and chairs are often very expensive. The first solution everyone considers is bringing a visit to IKEA. Although IKEA has very nice products and the quality is okay, you will get bored eventually.. If you don’t like IKEA furniture and you want to decorate or re-decorate your house in a different way, we have some nice tips for you!

Take a visit to some thrift stores. The furniture in thrift stores is often a little bit old-fashioned but you can pimp everything with paint. Last year, Kim found a dining table and a coffee table at a thrift store for 20 euros. The tables were very old-fashioned and we all laughed a little bit about her purchase. But she painted the tables white and they are beautiful!! We were shocked about the difference. Are you bored with the color? No problem, just give your furniture a new paint job and you have a new look!
Another nice tip is to buy four or six different dining chairs, look up some pictures on the internet and see for yourself that it looks really nice!

If you’re looking for a new couch but you have a low budget, ask your friends, family and parents if someone wants to get rid of their old couches. Choose a couch which is comfortable and visit a market where they sell fabrics. Some entrepreneurs sell lots of different fabrics so you can choose your perfect color and nature. For about 20 euros, you can buy enough fabric to cover your coach. The result is an awesome couch in your living room!

For our Dutch readers: take a look at gratisoptehalen.nl. If you’re lucky, you can find some nice pieces on this website.

More Tips for Traveling on a Budget

Ladies, as promised in our last column, we will give you more traveling on a budget tips. First we will show you a short video, which gives you five important budget tips.

There are many ways to reach your destination, you can go by plane but most of the time that is expensive. If you have a flexible traveling plan it is easier to book cheap flights, but you will have to be patience and really look for it. For cheap tickets look, for example, at the websites Skyplanner or Fare Compagny. Tuesdays and Thursdays are the best days to book your flight, because not many people choose to travel at those days.

The low budget options for traveling are for example by bus or train, but for the long distance trips, it is not an option. There are numerous sites where you can book a bus fare. For a train tickets there are many options. You can buy a one or two way ticket, but there are options to buy a ticket which is valet for more traveling days and in different countries. For all the InterRail ticket options look at the
NS Hispeed website.

Traveling on a budget

Hello Ladies! Today we would like to give you some inspiration for traveling on a budget.  Our previous column Seize the day can be useful for tips to enjoy yourself on a holiday.

As mentioned in the column Seize the day, you can use the website Vakantieveilingen.nl to bid on different activities. They also offer holiday options, the bidding starts at € 1,- and you can bid as high as your budget allows you to. As one of our readers mentioned in the comments you also have the company Groupon which gives you once a month great deals for holiday options as well.

On the internet you can find a lot of websites where you can find budget travel options. The site we recommend is Transitions Abroad.com. This site gives you many options and an overview of other interesting websites. Traveling cheaply is not just about saving money, it’s about getting the best experiences and a better value of your money. A few tips :

First, eat like the locals which will save you a lot, because food and drinks costs a lot. You can go to a grocery store or the local market  to buy your breakfast, lunch and fruit. For lunch you can try a picnic in the park. It is low budget , it will give you a good view and an opportunity to chat with other travelers or locals who enjoy their lunch break in the park. If you do like to go to a restaurant, have a look at the options given in the Lonely Planet and choose the fixed menu and the house wine. The fixed menu will offer you two or three choices of the local specialties.

The third tip: use the train for long distance traveling. If you travel during the night you can even spend the night on the train. Bring your own meal, drinks and snacks to avoid the high dining car prices. Often there are special sleeper-cars, but if you decide not to book one of those, do not forget to bring an inflatable neck-pillow! It will give you much comfort, but won’t need much space in your baggage.

Looking for more tips? See our next blog at the end of the week.

Second hand Treasures

Earlier this week we posted a column about ‘The clothing party’. A really nice party to clear out and extend your wardrobe. Today we have a second budget tip to extend your wardrobe. This tip is all about ‘Second hand treasures’.

‘Second hand treasures’ asks for some serious shopping. Therefore you probably have to go to the stores you usually not go to. You can buy cheap clothes in second hand (vintage) shops. Also at markets you can shop for second hand clothing. However, it is very hard to find proper second hand clothing that fit your body and are trendy and stylish. But that is no longer a problem. It is a trend to make your own clothing these days. But making your own clothes from scratch is very difficult and takes a lot of practice. This is where the second hand clothes come in. You can update lovely second hand clothes and make them trendy and fashionable. It is much easier to adjust existing clothing then make them from scratch. For inspiration you can look at the TLC show: Dresscue me.

Watch the Dutch promo of Dresscue me:

Starting from scratch
If you do want to make your own clothes from scratch it is important that you start with the basics. Don’t try to make a complicated dress when you sit behind the sewing-machine for the first time. You can find great books which cover the basics of sewing. A budget tip: try to buy your fabrics at the market, they sell cheaper fabrics than the official fabric stores.

The clothing party

We girls love to shop, only our budget doesn’t always allow our desire for shopping. This week we will give you girls some tips on how you can extend your wardrobe without spending a lot of money. Sometimes even without spending money at all. Can you imagine shopping without a budget?! Today’s budget solution is called: ‘The clothing party’! Combining our two favorite things in one evening, that sounds amazing, doesn’t it?

If you look in your closet you can pick out easily a number of pieces you never wear (even worse: have never worn at all). Don’t be ashamed, you are not the only girl who has a closet full of bad bargains. Even better news, your girlfriends most likely also have a closet full of bad bargains. That is why it’s time to organize a clothing party. You plan a date and invite all your girlfriends and they can invite their friends as well, because the more people the better. There is only one condition; everyone has to bring their bad bargains. Let the party begin!
Every girl can pick out the clothing that she likes. Your living room is the fitting room. You can easily ask your girlfriend for their opinion. The clothing party, is really a fun night on a budget. You can ask people to bring food and drinks along, to reduce the costs. At the end of the night everyone goes home with ‘new’ pieces without spending a dime. Your bad bargains are someone else’s treasures!

The clothing that is left at the end of the evening (the real bad bargains ;)) you can donate to a charity. In one night you clean out your closet and fill your closet with amazing new and free pieces!

Budget food

Mmmmm we would love to go out for dinner every week! Eat a nice salad or beef with fries and of course a big piece of chocolate cake as dessert. But also food is expensive, especially if you go out too many times. There are some solutions such as going to a student restaurant where you can get a nice meal for just 15 euros but the quality of the food often isn't very high.

This week, we will give some tips for making your own quality dinners or snacks and some cheap but very good restaurants. Also, we share some budget cooking experiences on Facebook and Twitter so keep your eyes open.

You want to have a nice evening or a lovely high tea with all your girlfriends but you don’t want to spend too much money? There are some things you can do to reduce the costs.
  • Arrange with your friends that everyone makes a small snack or a small bite. Everyone has different qualities and in this way, you have a lot of different snacks for a great evening. On the internet, you can find many recipes for small snacks. Some examples are:
  • For the evening: wine is expensive, but it doesn’t have to be! On the website of ... you can find cheap wines of high quality! You can find the wines in your local supermarket or just order it on the web.
  • You don’t have enough plates or glasses? Let everyone bring their own. This makes the table look very funny and very cosy.
  • Download some romantic movies, light some candles and your done! This is an evening for the girls, without the boys!!

Create your own Boot Camp Workout

Make your own bootcamp! Last year Boot Camps were hot and in many cities you were able to sign up in a program and once or twice a week you could kill yourself in a workout similar to the ones the soldiers get. But...you don’t have to sign up for a group, you can make your own boot camp workout with friends!!!

Boot camp workouts are great to get in shape because you work on your entire body with different exercises. You burn a lot of calories and it is efficient because you don’t need a lot of time, so it is easy to fit in a busy schedule. You won’t get bored if you try to think of different exercises and you can make them as challenging as you want them to be.

This sounds nice but how can I make a boot camp workout? Easy, go online and you will find many different suggestions and tips. Today we give you our favorite exercises and tips:

Tip 1: When you start, try to make a schedule of your workouts and, slowly, increase the intensity. If you make it to hard in the beginning you won’t persevere. Start with only 15 or 30 minutes a day twice a week and you will be able to keep going.

Start with a 10 till 15 minutes warm-up exercise. Go for a jog or a short run and choose 5 till 10 exercises. Try to perform each one after the other for 30-60 seconds.

Exercise tips
1)      Jumping Jacks
If you like to increase the intensity, after the jump put your feet back together and bring the right knee up and snap the foot out in a front kick.
2)      High jogs
3)      Triceps dips
Find a bench on the street or in the park and you can do them while you jog.
4)      Ski jumps
5)      Lunges
6)      Pushups
In the beginning you can do this exercise on your knees instead of your toes to lower the intensity.

Tip 2: Try to find somebody to workout with. It is always more fun to work out together and to challenge eachother. Moreover, if you don’t want to go, your fiend can convince you to go.

At the end of your workout do not forget to do a cooling down exercise! Good luck ladies and most important, have FUN!

Exercising on a budget

Dear ladies. We all like to have our body in shape, but sometimes you also have to pay attention to your budget and a gym membership is very expensive. Today, we will give you some tips on how to stay in shape on a budget, because we have to keep in mind to move over 30 minutes every day!

A budget tip is to go for a swim in the morning before classes or work. Most of the time there is an early bird discount and you will start your day fresh. Exercising gives you a lot of energy especially in the morning.

If you do want to go to a gym, but you don’t have the money for a wellness center, try to look for a budget gym. They are cheaper because they don’t have spa facilities and sometimes don’t offer group lessons. The disadvantage of these gyms is that they are very busy at particular times during the day. If you can avoid those hours it is a good budget option.

Besides low budget tips we also have some tips to work out for free. Tip 1: take the stars instead of the elevator or the escalator. For example, when you have to go to the 6th floor, go up by using the elevator but when you leave take the stars. It is easier going down the stairs than going up and it will burn calories. You will use over 200 muscles and 15 minutes of taking the stairs equals 30 minutes jogging!

Tip 2 is cleaning your apartment. During this activity you will use many muscles and you will burn many calories and afterwards your apartment is nice and clean. For example, 30 minutes of vacuuming burns over 120 calories and ironing almost 80. Cleaning you windows will burn 120 calories.

For our third tip you need a friend  for company and nice weather. You can do many different activities outside which are good for your body and shape. Go for a run through the park and if you don’t like running go for a walk, because walking takes 100 calories per 30 minutes. Or go to the beach, because walking through the sand is much harder. If you have roller blades, you can use them. It is fun, fast and it burns a lot of calories, but keep your safety in mind. Use the right equipment and protection.

The next video will show you a funny way of walking and exercising together.

Do not try this at home, but use it to get inspired!

Later on this week we will give some tips for the woman who like to exercise outside. You can create your own bootcamp!

Budget Tips for facial, hair and nail care

Every woman wants to look healthy en beautiful. Unfortunately, beauty products are often very expensive and sometimes they don’t even work! Moreover, some of the cheapest products work even better and provide us with the result we want. In this blog, we give tips for facial, hair and nail care.

Facial care
Sometimes (and certainly with this cold weather), our faces need a health boost. The cold weather gives us a dry skin and we get a pale face. Face masks are perfect for refreshing your face but why pay for a face mask when you can use basic ingredients to make your own simple, hydrating masks and scrubs? Beauty products don't have to cost an arm and a leg. You can make your own cream or scrub for a fraction of the price. Whether you have an oily skin, a dry skin, a sensitive skin or acne-prone skin, you can make a mask with the best ingredients yourself. About.com.Beauty presents you 20 recipes for 6 different skin types. Take a look at their website for your personal face mask.

For your other facial care such as day and night creams and make up removers, try the home-products of the drugstores. For our dutch readers, Etos and Kruidvat products are also very good for you face and way more cheaper than the A brands.

Hair care
A hairdresser is expensive. Most of the time we just dye our hare in the same color we had for years because otherwise the bill is too high. The solution of today is: the hair-dressing academy! In almost every city, you can find some salons that work with hair-dresser students. All the hairdressers are being supervised so they can’t mess up your hair really bad and you just pay a fraction of the price you normally pay at a profession salon. You can always give it a try!

Nail care
Especially in the winter, you need to give your nails special attention. Nails are weak and with all the thick clothes, our nails need to look beautiful. The best and cheapest make-up brand at this moment is Essence.

The Essence make up is great. The price is very low but the quality is good. Moreover, they know what women want and they offer lots of handy tools for make up and nail art. For the nails, they have a lot of colors and they sell quick-dry drops that work really well. Also, they now have a new nail product that gives your nails the look of professional gel nails.

Another tip is to buy some cheap fake nails and put them on. You can color these nails in any color you like, the color will stay on much longer and your nails won’t break. Perfect!!

Seize the day

Last week our blog was about shopping tips. This time I would like to give you ladies budget tips to enjoy yourself during your holiday. I will give you inspiration for a day off ,when you for example would like to plan a nice day with friends on a  limited budget.

My first tip is to go and have a look at the Dutch website of Vakantieveilingen. On this website you will find many suggestions to do in different categories; for an evening out with friends, beauty treatments, tips for a whole day and restaurant tips. Before you plan your day, you can have a look at the website to get ideas and discounts. This website is designed to bid on different activities. The bidding starts at € 1,- and you can bid as high as your budget allows you to. You can bit on all kinds of activities. For example I got two first class tickets to the musical “We will rock you” for half the price!

When you have a low budget, try to make use of the weather. During the cold days in the winter, you could do something active to warm up. For example, you can arrange to go ice-skating and this year you are lucky because you can do it outside for free! However, make sure that the ice is thick enough! Outside the city you can go for a long trip. Ask your friends to bring something nice to eat and bring hot chocolate, a nice treat after the cold.

On a summers day you can meet up with some friends in the park. Bring one or more large blankets to sit on and ask all your friends to bring something to drink and to eat (American style). You can start in the afternoon with drinks and if somebody has a barbeque set, you can end the day together with a dinner/barbeque till sundown.

During the spring or autumn you can go to the beach for a long walk and a drink at one of the beach houses. The advantage during those seasons is that it is not too busy and if you go to a less popular part of the beach, most of the time you don’t have to pay for parking.

For my next tip, you can think of visiting a city where you have never been before. This can give you an option to spend the day getting to know a different place. Moreover you can try a different restaurant. For reviews of different restaurants in every town, go to Iens. There is a button on the website which gives you the opportunity to profit from discounts in selected restaurants. To get an overview of the different hotspots in a city, go to the website of the local tourist agency (VVV). You can find list in different categories; museums, buildings which are worth seeing, different events in the city and many more. A few of our suggestions:
  • Amsterdam
  • Maastricht
  • Den Bosch
  • Leiden
  • Antwerp
  • Brussels
If you go to the website of Neweuropetours you find a list of cities where you can arrange a “free” walking tour through the city by local expert guides. At the end of the tour you can give the guide a tip suitable for your budget.

Tip: Beware that if you go to a city for a whole day, your parking costs can be pretty high if you use
one of the parking garages. You can use the P+R parking spaces around the city to avoid this. From
this parking spot you can use public transport to go to the city center. Or you can choose to go by public transport. Go to the website of NS for your discount options.

Budget shopping

We all recognize the following problem: we would like to score a new outfit but we also have to pay the rent at the end of the month. I am going to give you some tips about how you can do both. The solution: budget shopping!! Of course we all know the shops where you can buy low budget clothing, for example H&M and Primark. But the consequence of shopping there is that you will see your outfit at almost every street corner.

To create a more unique look you need to put in a bit more effort. Online you can find unique bargains. Many brands have online outlets where you can buy last season’s collection.  Another fashion paradise online is markplaats.nl. Here you can find the shirt you fell in love with in the store for a fraction of the original price. You can find clothing that is never been worn, the price tags are still attached! Last year, I found an amazing long summer dress in the store that I fell in love with but my size was sold out. Later on, I found the same dress on marktplaats.nl. The girl who owned it sold the dress to me for 50% of the original price. Talking about killing two birds with one stone!!
Another great tip to find beautiful labels for a great price is a sample sale. When a brand wants to get rid of their old collection they organize a sample sale. Sometimes you will even find sample sales from current collections. Sample sales are usually organized in big locations. So count on some use of elbows and long queues, but you can find great pieces for a fraction from the original price. On the Internet you can find information about the upcoming sample sales.

In the Netherlands, there are great markets where you can find nice vintage and second hand clothing. In Amsterdam for example, you have Waterlooplein. But women who don’t like second hand clothing can visit one of the many outlet malls in the Netherlands. A few examples are Batavia stad in Lelystad (bataviastad.nl) and Rosada in Rosendaal (rosada.nl).  These outlet malls consist of different brands that all have an own store. The malls look like little villages, you can shop here all day and find great brands with nice discounts. The villages also have great lunchrooms and parking is really good arranged. The only disadvantage is that the stores tend to have really old collections. You have to be lucky and visit when they just got restocked. If you are there at the right moment, you can shop till you drop.

When you want a bargain, look outside the normal shopping street in your own town. Labels become affordable if you look in the right place. Even on a small budget you can score a great outfit and as well have a fun day with your girlfriends. In a few weeks I will post a column about more creative ways to extend your wardrobe.
